MAUI DOLPHIN SWIM CLUB

Maui Dolphins Swim Club is a USA-Swimming club.  Our primary purpose is to develop swimmers to learn to swim right & fast and to compete with other swimmers.  To that end, we also have beginning swimming classes in the hope and expectation that swimmers will move beyond the very basics of swimming and learn to have fun getting better and faster.  Our beginning swimmer classes are limited in the summer months by the coaching and space available.  Come to the pool to discuss space and for a "tryout".  You'll find us at the Upcountry Pool in Pukalani 4:30-6pm Monday through Friday all year long.

The following are required at the time of registration:

  • Completed application packet [including USA Swimming form] (click here for blank MDSC Registration form in Adobe format; click for USA-Swimming form: 2008 Athlete for MDSC or 2008 Athlete Any Team or 2008 Non-athlete ie; coaches, officials, marshalls).  The USA-S forms are "active", meaning you can fill them out on your computer and print them out neatly.
  • 2 photo copies of birth certificate or passport
  • Fees: Checks made payable to: “MDSC” or “Maui Dolphins Swim Club”
    • Annual USA Swimming Registration Fee: $53.00/swimmer (must be paid again each calendar year to cover yearly insurance)
    • Monthly Dues: $40.00/month for the first child in a family and $20.00/month for each additional child in a family.  Dues are pro-rated for your first month if after the 15th of the month.

·        Monthly dues pay for coaching fees. Please pay the dues at the pool desk during the first week of each month. If dues are unreasonably late, your child may not be allowed to swim.  If you are unable to make your payment on time, please notify the desk monitor to make special arrangements.

·        Dues are generally not pro-rated (except for new swimmers joining after the 15th of the month). The full amount is due if the swimmer swims for any part of the month.

·        If a swimmer is unable to swim for an extended period because of illness, travel, or other commitments, dues will be waived. You must let the desk monitor or board member know about the absence . If your child decides to stop swimming, please let us know as soon as possible because we often have a waiting list.

Volunteer Obligations:

·        Your family is joining a club run by volunteer board members. From time to time, you will be asked to help with various tasks necessary to the operation of the club (occasional fundraising, committees, desk monitors, etc). Additionally, MDSC is part of the Maui Age Group Swimming Association (MAGSA), and parents/guardians will be asked to help out MAGSA events (timers, deck marshalls, officials, etc.) – even if your swimmer is not competing in the particular event.

Maui Dolphins Swim Club Information:

New/ Transferring Applicants:

Ø       The Head Coach of the Maui Dolphin Swim Club must evaluate all prospective swimmers for placement by conducting a swim assessment.   (This usually only takes a few minutes asking the swimmer to swim a few laps to observe whether the swimmer knows how to breath & kick properly, knows freestyle, backstroke and/or breaststroke).  A parent and/or guardian must be in attendance for this evaluation.

Ø       All registration forms and copies of birth certificate(s) must be completed and submitted with payment before the swimmer can swim workouts with the club.  Signed paperwork/ registration forms must be filled out before the evaluation.  Dues are non-refundable.

Equipment

Ø       Kick boards and pull buoys are provided, but swimmers must supply (required for ALL groups) their own goggles and fins (for “Flippers” only). Other recommended items: swim cap, towel,  & shower supplies.

Snacks

Ø       Many families choose to donate after-practice snacks. Donating snacks is completely voluntary/optional, and the snacks are usually very simple - and should be healthy snacks that will not interfere with dinner. If you do wish to donate, please sign up on the snack calendar at the desk.

Family Commitment

Ø       Families are expected to participate in club events and commitments. Examples include: serving as desk monitor; participating in occasional fundraising; timing at swim meets; providing hospitality at host swim meets [food donations, set-up, clean-up, acting as safety marshal]; helping to chaperone swimmers; being a designated driver. The club also needs member support in serving on the Board of Directors and various Board committees.

Ø       Parents can get a discount on fees for volunteering for the club or MAGSA.

Ø       Members are required to make every effort to attend all meetings, special activities, and fundraisers.

Ø       Individual swimmers may qualify to travel for competition in off-island events as determined by qualifying times.  If the club decides to send swimmers to an off-island swim meet, The Board and Head Caoch will decide on if and how much swimmers & coaches will be reimbursed for the trip.  (There may be special fundraising required for trips like this which traveling swimmer's families are expected to participate in.)  Parents who wish to attend an off-island meet (when an MDSC coach cannot attend), MDSC's Head Coach will contact a USA-S Coach to oversee the swimmer at the swim event - the swimmer and parents will be expected to support that club's efforts.  The Head Coach  and approval of the Board of Directors and Head Coach.  You may be asked to help with special fundraising and travel arrangements if your child will be attending an off-island meet.

Ø       All swimmers are encouraged to swim in swim meets when their coach think's they're ready.  Swimmers in the Spinners and Silvers have an obligation to attend as many meets as possible during the regular season.

Other General Rules

Ø       All swimmers need to check in at the front desk each day before swimming.

Ø       NO DIVING.  That's right.  NO DIVING.  The most dangerous part of competitive swimming is swimmers diving and hitting the bottom, diving on each other, not looking where there going, etc..  As such there is no diving except during diving practice under the direct supervision of a coach who makes sure the swimmer is ready, the water is deep enough (USA-S allows diving practice in 6' or deeper water; and meets must be a minimum or 4'), the water is clear of other swimmers.  This no diving rule applies during warm-ups at swim meets - diving only allowed in designated dive lanes under the supervision of a coach.

Ø       Swimmers are expected to conduct themselves properly.  Each swimmer is a reflection and a representative of the team. Swimmers are expected to show respect for their coaches and team members.  Foul or abusive language will not be tolerated.

Ø       All swimmers must follow all pool rules:  no running, no horseplay, no climbing on fences, etc. Pool facility and all equipment, such as kick-boards, lane lines, bathrooms, and bulletin boards are to be treated with the utmost respect and care.  Swimmers (and parents) are not allowed on lifeguard towers, diving boards, pool covers or behind front desk.  There is NO going under the bulkhead at any pool.  (Swimmers will be asked to leave for the day or longer if they dive under the bulkhead.)

Ø       Keep Back from the pool! During practice, children, friends, and parents MUST keep away from the pool…e.g. please stay in office, on or near the area of the bleachers and picnic tables, etc.  Coaches cannot concentrate on coaching and swimmers if we have to watch children playing on the pool deck near the water.

Participation in Swim Meets

Ø       Swimmers must sign up for each individual swim meet. Entries for each meet are due no later than the Monday prior to each meet. If a swimmer signs up for a meet and then finds that he/she can’t attend, the coach must be notified as soon as possible. The club is charged $1.00 per swimmer for every meet based on the entries submitted Monday before the meet, so please do not sign up for a meet unless you are certain you can attend.

Ø       Every swimmer must check in with the Head Coach on the morning of the meet. Any swimmers who do not check in by 7:45 am must be scratched from the meet, per MAGSA/USA Swimming rules.

Termination of Membership

Ø       The Board of Directors or Head Coach may terminate membership for any due cause.  A member’s involvement, commitment, adherence to rules, behavior, and dues status will be considered.

Ø       Terminated members may appeal to the Board of Directors.
